A weak spray does not by itself identify a worn-out pump. Water supply, nozzles, valves, controls, and the pump can all affect performance. Useful troubleshooting starts with the symptom, the conditions when it appeared, and the specifications for the installed equipment.
Safety before troubleshooting
Safety first: observe from designated safe areas. Do not open guards or electrical cabinets, touch suspected leaks, or adjust pressure controls. Inspection and repair requiring access to machinery or pressurized components belong to qualified, authorized personnel using the equipment's energy-control procedure. A stop button alone does not isolate stored pressure or prevent restart.
1. Pressure falls during a wash function
Compare an existing gauge reading with previous readings for the same function, nozzle configuration, and operating conditions. A static reading is not a substitute for a running measurement. Do not run faulty equipment just to collect another reading.
A restricted inlet, inadequate supply, incorrect pump speed, worn valves or seals, an unloader or regulator fault, and a faulty gauge are possible causes. A worn or incorrectly sized nozzle can also lower pressure: in a positive-displacement system, a larger opening offers less resistance to the supplied flow. Pressure loss alone does not establish which component needs replacement.
2. New rattling, knocking, or vibration appears
A gravel-like sound can accompany cavitation, but air ingestion, valve problems, bearings, and other mechanical faults can produce overlapping symptoms. New severe noise or vibration warrants stopping the affected equipment through the site's safe shutdown procedure and arranging assessment. Keep clear of moving equipment and connected piping; do not use your hand to assess vibration.
Record whether the symptom coincided with low tank level, another wash function, recent service, or a supply change. Those observations help a technician choose measurements; they are not a diagnosis.
3. Oil changes appearance
Where an external sight glass can be read safely, report a change in level or appearance. Milky oil can indicate water contamination, while cloudiness or foam can have other causes. Appearance alone cannot prove a failed seal or existing bearing damage.
Suspected contamination needs prompt assessment before further operation. A qualified technician can check the specified lubricant, possible entry paths, and the condition of the pump. Do not open a running pump's fill cap or assume an oil change fixes the source of contamination.
4. A leak develops
Note the general location from a safe distance. Water on the floor might come from a connection, a pump seal, another nearby component, or normal drainage specified by the manufacturer. It still needs investigation if new or increasing.
Keep people clear of a suspected high-pressure leak and follow the site shutdown procedure. Never search for it with a hand, tighten a live fitting, or approach a jet to photograph it. Report the observation without trying to expose its source.
5. The station starts and stops unusually often
On a system designed to cycle, a change in cycling can reflect demand, leakage, pressure-control faults, a check valve, an accumulator where fitted, or control logic. Other systems normally operate continuously or use variable-speed control. There is no universal acceptable number of starts for every installation.
Record the pattern already observed and any displayed alarm. Leave control settings and accumulator work to qualified personnel. Do not alter a setpoint to hide the symptom.
6. The motor struggles or protection trips
Failure to start, abnormal sound, a trip, or signs of overheating can involve electrical supply, the drive, or the mechanical load. Do not test motor temperature by touch or reset a breaker to see whether it happens again. Qualified assessment must establish that reenergization is safe before a reset or restart.
Smoke, burning odor, visible arcing, or substantial new vibration requires keeping people clear and following the site's emergency or shutdown procedure. Do not open an enclosure to investigate.
7. Output changes between functions
If one application is weak while another appears normal, the affected line, valve, nozzle, or command timing deserves attention. A shared supply or pump limitation remains possible. Poor cleaning can also involve chemistry, so avoid equating every wash-quality complaint with pump pressure.
What to send with a service request
Provide the equipment identity if already available, symptom onset, exact non-sensitive alarm text, affected functions, recent changes, and safely available historical readings. Do not delay reporting an urgent fault while building a log.
Inspection intervals, lubricants, allowable leakage, and operating limits come from the actual equipment manuals and the site's service plan. Strainer cleaning is hands-on work: only trained, authorized personnel should perform it with the specified isolation and pressure release.
