They fail in a sequence that was visible for weeks — a bearing that got louder, a photo eye that needed wiping twice a shift, a pressure gauge that settled a little lower each month. Preventive maintenance is the discipline of catching that sequence early, while it's still a part on a shelf instead of a closed tunnel on a Saturday.
This checklist is organized by interval — daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly — and then by system, so a site lead can hand the daily block to an attendant and keep the quarterly block for a technician visit. Treat the intervals as a starting framework, not a manufacturer specification. Your equipment manuals, your volume, and your water quality all move them.
Before you use this checklist
Everything below is written for trained operators and maintenance staff working within their own site's safety program. Anything involving energized electrical equipment, a conveyor that can move, a pressurized system, or a confined space in the trench or pit belongs to a qualified technician following lockout/tagout. When this checklist says stop and call, it means stop.

How to Use These Intervals
A wash running 200 cars a day and a wash running 900 are not on the same schedule, and no generic list changes that. Three things should push your intervals tighter:
- Volume. Wear tracks cycles, not calendar days. High-throughput express tunnels move most inspection items up a step.
- Water quality. Hard water and heavy mineral content accelerate scale on nozzles, tips, eductors, and heat-transfer surfaces. Sites on reclaim carry their own load.
- Environment. Salt air, sustained heat, humidity, and outdoor exposure shorten the life of seals, hoses, plastics, bearings, and electrical connections. Florida sites feel all four.
Where a manufacturer publishes a specific interval or procedure for your equipment, that document wins. This checklist is a floor for sites that don't have one, and a cross-check for sites that do.
Daily
Observational only. No tools, no access to energized equipment.

Weekly
A closer look, and sometimes an open cabinet door.
- Rollers, chain, guide rails
- Pump oil, strainers, weeping

Daily Inspections
Daily items are observational. They should take one person 15–20 minutes at open plus a quick pass at close, and they should require no tools and no access to energized equipment.
Open of business
- Walk the tunnel with the equipment off and look at the floor. Puddles, chemical pooling, and debris are some of the cheapest diagnostic information available to you.
- Check chemical drum and tote levels against yesterday's count. An unexplained jump in usage is usually a leak or a failed check valve, not a busy day.
- Look at each pressure gauge at rest and at run, and write the number down. A gauge you never record can't tell you anything.
- Confirm every emergency stop is present, unobstructed, and undamaged. Test per your site's procedure.
- Wipe photo eye lenses, reflectors, and sensor faces. Soap film, wax haze, and mineral spotting are a frequent cause of nuisance tunnel stops.
- Check the trench and pit for standing debris — wheel weights, hubcaps, trim pieces, gravel.
Through the day
- Listen. Operators who know their wash hear a failing bearing, a cavitating pump, or a dragging chain before any instrument reports it.
- Watch the first several cars through. Coverage gaps, uneven foam, weak application, and poor drying show up on vehicles long before they show up on a gauge.
- Note every fault, stop, and reset — even the ones that clear themselves. Intermittent faults are diagnosed from patterns, and the pattern only exists if someone wrote it down.
Close
- Rinse down applicators, brushes, cloth, and wraps per your chemistry supplier's guidance.
- Empty and clean trash and debris catches.
- Record the day's car count next to the day's chemical usage.
Weekly Inspections
Weekly items involve looking more closely, and sometimes opening a cabinet. Keep them on one named person so nothing falls between shifts.
Conveyor and tunnel
- Inspect rollers for flat spots, cracked or missing wheels, and free rotation.
- Look at chain condition along accessible runs — stiff links, visible elongation, rust, and side-plate wear.
- Check guide rails and correlator for impact damage and loose fasteners.
- Confirm the roller-up mechanism cycles cleanly and consistently.
Pumps and water
- Check pump oil level and appearance. Milky or cloudy oil means water is getting where it shouldn't — that's a technician call, not a top-off.
- Inspect for weeping at packings, fittings, and manifolds. A small drip is data.
- Clean inlet strainers and Y-strainers. A restricted suction line is the root cause behind a surprising share of "the pump is weak" calls.
- Compare running pressures to the numbers you've been recording. Direction matters more than any single reading.
Chemical systems
- Inspect suction tubes, foot valves, and check valves for cracking, hardening, and debris.
- Look for chemical crystallization or scale at metering tips and eductors.
- Verify each product is in the position it's supposed to be in. Mis-stocked drums are more common than anyone admits and produce baffling wash-quality complaints.
- Confirm dilution water pressure at the eductors is where it normally sits.
Dryers and blowers
- Clear inlet screens and intake areas. Restricted intake is a frequent contributor to gradual drying loss.
- Listen for bearing noise and unusual vibration at startup and shutdown.
- Check nozzle and plenum position and look for impact damage.
Electrical and controls
- Visually inspect enclosures for moisture intrusion, corrosion, and pest activity — with the doors closed unless a qualified person is doing the work.
- Confirm the fault and alarm history in the controller is being reviewed, not just cleared.
Monthly Inspections
Monthly is where the program becomes quantitative. Each of these produces a number or a comparison you can act on, rather than an impression.
- Measure chemical dispensed volume for each product rather than trusting the label dilution. Draw rates drift as tips wear, tubing hardens, and water pressure changes. If you track cost per car, this is the number that makes it real.
- Verify sensor alignment, not just cleanliness. Vibration and vehicle contact move photo eyes and reflectors gradually.
- Inspect belts and drives for glazing, cracking, and correct tension where your equipment uses them.
- Check fasteners and mounts on arches, applicators, wraps, and dryer assemblies. Tunnels vibrate; hardware walks.
- Inspect hoses and fittings for abrasion, ballooning, and chafe points — especially anywhere a hose crosses a moving component.
- Review water treatment and reclaim performance against how the wash is actually finishing. Spotting, filming, and odor are the operator-visible symptoms of a treatment or reclaim problem, and both systems are usually maintained by the operator or the vendor who supplied them.
- Reconcile the fault log. Three nuisance stops a month at the same sensor is a failing sensor, not bad luck.
Quarterly Inspections
Quarterly work is where a technician earns the visit, because most of it involves energized equipment, disassembly, or measurement against a specification. This is a general quarterly scope for a commercial wash, whoever performs it:
- Conveyor chain tension and wear measurement, take-up assembly condition, sprocket wear, and drive alignment.
- Pump valve and packing inspection, unloader and regulator function, and pressure verification against spec.
- Motor condition: current draw under load, bearing condition, thermal behavior, and connection integrity.
- Controls: input and output verification, connection tightness, condition of terminations, VFD parameters, and fault history.
- Chemical system calibration across the full menu, not just the top package.
- Dryer and blower assessment: impeller condition and buildup, bearing wear, airflow, and rotation direction confirmed after any motor work.
- Safety systems: emergency stops, interlocks, guarding, and signage verified as functional — never bypassed to keep a wash running.
This is also the right cadence for a documented condition report, so you're comparing this quarter to last quarter rather than to memory. Scope varies by provider, so confirm in writing what a program covers before you sign one. Warning Signs That Need a Technician Now
Some findings aren't checklist items — they're stop conditions. The judgment line is straightforward: operators observe, clean, record, and report. Technicians measure, adjust, disassemble, and repair. A checklist that pushes staff across that line isn't a maintenance program; it's an incident waiting for a date.
Stop the wash and call for service
- A gravel or marbles sound from a pump. That's cavitation, and running through it damages valves, packings, and bearings quickly.
- Burning smell, smoke, scorch marks, or discoloration at any electrical enclosure or motor. Do not open the enclosure. Do not reset it.
- Milky or emulsified pump oil. Water has crossed into the crankcase.
- A breaker or overload that trips more than once. Repeated resets are how a nuisance trip becomes a burned motor.
- Any conveyor that moves when it shouldn't, or won't stop when commanded. This is a safety fault, not a performance fault.
- Visible chain damage, a bent or seized roller, or a chain jumping a sprocket. Load path failures escalate fast.
- A safety device that someone has bypassed, jumpered, or taped. Find out who and why, and restore it before the wash runs.

Building This Into a Routine That Survives a Busy Week
Checklists fail for boring reasons — nobody owns them, they live in someone's phone, or they're too long to finish before the first car.
- Name an owner per interval. Daily belongs to the shift lead. Weekly belongs to one person. Quarterly belongs to a technician.
- Keep records in one place, with numbers. Pressures, chemical volumes, car counts, fault codes. Trends are the entire value.
